New tax relief to be applied to Junior Doctors' exam fees

Jonathan Tetsell 19/1/2018 1 minute read

Jonathan Tetsell explains how some Junior Doctors could now benefit from tax relief on their exam fees.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has announced recently that its negotiations with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the College's Trainees Committee have proven successful. HMRC is said to have confirmed in writing to them that Trainees in the 10 surgical specialties will be able to claim tax relief on the examination fee for the Specialty Fellowship Examinations (FRCS).

This will apply to individuals employed on training contracts as specialty trainees and who pay for the Specialty Fellowship exam fees themsleves. It will work whereby the individual will qualify for a deduction in their exam fee against their earnings during that term of employment. A requirement will be that individuals complete their Specialty Fellowship exam successfully as part of their training contract.

This is a real step forward for medical professionals who can incur significant personal expense over the course of their training. Obtaining tax relief on this cost could really help with their personal finances.
